Cutter excavation equipment

One of the core functions of dredging is the excavating process. The only point during this activity when there is physical contact between the soil and the ship – or parts of the ship – is either via a spinning cutterhead or dredge wheel, in the case of a cutter suction dredger. The productivity of a cutter suction dredger is influenced greatly by the effectiveness of this equipment.

Cutterheads

IHC America has been developing cutterheads for decades based on practical experience with numerous types of soil and cutter suction dredgers. IHC America’s cutters are subject to continuous technological improvement and provide an ideal solution for every cutter dredging challenge. They can be fitted with a variety of teeth and replaceable cutting edges to offer the full spectrum of standard and customized excavation tools for all types of  soil.

The cutterhead is integrated within the vessels to deliver high productivity and minimal downtime thanks to the profile, spacing and size of the arms, as well as the location, orientation and form of the teeth. An example is the newly developed Lancelot cutterhead. In loose compacted soil, it makes better use of the available power, resulting in a higher output of dredged material thanks to its cylindrical shape and availability of additionalarms.

Dredging wheels

IHC America’s dredging wheel is a highly efficient tool for dredging a wide range of materials. High levels of productivity are guaranteed thanks to the excellent cutting properties, constant dredging output in both directions of swing and the almost complete absence of blockage. Optimum mixture density, low spillage and sensitivity to debris – such as rocks and tree stumps – significantly contribute to efficiency.

Flexible spud carrier

Strong winds and high waves can create problems for cutter suction dredgers. The waves can exert enormous pressure on the spud that holds the dredger to the seabed, straining the spud or even breaking it. Heavy seas can even force the dredger to stop working.

A flexible spud carrier, with its special designed hydraulic system, can help  solve this problem. When stresses due to the motion of the waves are too high, these special spud carriers prevent the spuds from breaking – preventing damage and downtime.
